English Together is a justice project of the UUCPA Action Council, brought to us by UUCPA member Guadalupe Valdés. Its goal is to coach Spanish-speaking immigrants in the use of workplace English through a series of 10 one-hour coaching sessions, thus addressing the two-fold challenge of building community and providing opportunities for immigrant workers to develop practical English-speaking skills. Workers become more confident in using English, and the process of workers and volunteers coming together breaks down barriers and builds trust.
Volunteers will be trained and do not need to be able to speak Spanish in order to participate. The fall volunteer cycle begins in a few weeks, so if you would like to learn more about volunteering, please go to English Together’s website to register for one of the information sessions: Monday, August 29, 2022, 7 pm; Tuesday, Sept. 6, 7 pm; or Thursday, Sept. 8, 7 pm.
Dr. Valdés, who developed the program, is Professor Emeritus in the Stanford Graduate School of Education and one of the most eminent experts on Spanish-English bilingualism in the United States.
