The leaked news that the Supreme Court will almost certainly overturn Roe v. Wade after 50 years has landed with a sickening, world-shaking crash in our lives. While many rejoice, the vast majority of US Americans want abortion to remain available. But we have been so polarized for so long that we seldom reach across the gulf of our differences to talk about this issue. And abortion deserves to be engaged as a moral question.
With today’s sermon, Amy will look at some of the values that we weigh as we consider the question, and on which good people of conscience may sharply disagree: bodily autonomy, our obligations to the vulnerable, which religious traditions to follow, and who has the moral status of personhood. Following the traces of these values leads to one conclusion: that abortion must remain legal.
