Read The Once and Future Witches, by Alix E. Harrow, and join the conversation on August 18.
Book Review: The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow | Books, Witch novels, Fantasy books

“Once upon a time,” says Jessica Wick on National Public Radio, “Alix Harrow wrote about three sisters. Also, suffragists, witching, folklore, flawed alliances, an alternate America, and women’s work. She gave this second novel many gifts: charm, grace, and gorgeousness; feral wonder, clear vision, an ardent heart. She gave it history, awareness of injustice and will to survive it. And so it went into the world to seek its fortune, inviting readers to settle in; to sigh with the pleasure of finding a not too this, not too that, just right story.” Harrow, whose first book was The Ten Thousand Doors of January, uses the elements of fantasy the way great sci fi writers use imagined worlds and technologies: to offer us a new lens on our own society, mores, and inner lives. Make a pot of tea and invite the cat to settle onto your lap, because you won’t want to put this book down until the last page.

You can find it in stock at Kepler’s (where we are soon to be registered among their book clubs!), or at your local library.

The Sci-Fi and Fantasy Discussion Group was meeting via Zoom before it was cool! Lovers of science fiction and fantasy, at UUCPA and beyond, have been getting together online to talk about books, movies, and television episodes chosen by the group, every other month since early 2019. Past books include The Broken Earth Trilogy (N. K. Jemisin), The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (Robert Heinlein), Parable of the Sower (Octavia Butler), The Left Hand of Darkness (Ursula K. Le Guin), Red Moon (Kim Stanley Robinson); past television and movies include Arrival, Blink (Doctor Who), Serenity and The Train Job (Firefly), and The Day the Earth Stood Still.

To receive reminders of future gatherings, subscribe to the group’s very low-volume e-mail list.
