Upcoming Adult Classes

ALJ Class: Love at the Center of UU TheologizingALJ Class: Love at the Center of UU Theologizing

08/24/2025, 11:45 am - 1:15 pm (Add to calendar: Google, iCal, webcal)

Date: 08/24/25

Time: 11:45 am

Location: Fireside, hybrid

Presenter: Dr. Jay Atkinson:

Jay Atkinson retired in 2011 from 32 years of full-time service in Unitarian Universalist parish ministry, During those ministries he also served at various times on the adjunct faculties of our UU seminaries in Chicago and Berkeley (Starr King School for the Ministry).  Before turning to professional ministry, he did research in nuclear physics.  Currently he is a Research Scholar at Starr King with a focus on UU history.

Description:

A year ago, Dr. Atkinson offered a guest sermon at UUCPA titled, “Did Jesus and the Universalists Get It Right?”  His answer was “yes,” as he traced how Jesus’s life and message of Love became sidelined in the main thread of Christian theology while resonating with our Universalist tradition of “God as Love” and our new UUA language that places Love at the center of UU values. This presentation will expand on the history of “Love” in Unitarian and Universalist thinking over the centuries, how it lay at the basis of our historic rebellion against orthodox Christianity, and the strange way in which it now seems to be leading us back to the central idea of Jesus’s own preaching, long after many UUs claim to have left Christianity behind.  He will juxtapose that with what’s happening in the modern Christian movement of open and relational theism, which is putting “Love” back into the center of their own thinking.  Are UUs and progressive Christians both moving back toward “Love” as a theological center point from two different directions?

Fourth Sunday Waffles and snacks will be available after the service. Please use a paper plate.  Suggested contribution $2.

Child care will be provided.

Upcoming Group Meetings/Gatherings

Resonant Reading (Wednesday) - "Checkmate" Friedrich Moritz August RetzschResonant Reading (Wednesday) – “Checkmate” Friedrich Moritz August Retzsch

08/13/2025, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm (Add to calendar: Google, iCal, webcal)

An exploration of ideas, feelings, and our life experiences, using a different short reading as our springboard each time. The sessions are on Saturdays, 4-5, and on Wednesdays, 12-1. All are wide open and you are welcome to come twice a week or once in a while.
The participants over the years have found that the approach we take, and the respectful, affectionate community of inquirers in which we read and converse, are as important as the reading itself. While many small groups begin with a check-in, with a session only an hour long, Resonant Reading jumps right in to the conversation. Those who are frequently in the group get to know each other very well this way, and those who are new will soon find they are among friends.

Facilitators use a light hand, posting the reading in the chat and calling on whoever’s Zoom hand is up. Suggestions for readings* come from group members, who also take turns facilitating, if they want to try that role.

The reading for this session:

1799 painting known as “Checkmate” (originally titled Die Schachspieler “The Chess Players”).
–Friedrich Moritz August Retzsch (1779–1857)

*This activity was formerly called “Sacred Text Reading.” That proved misleading–for one thing, more often than not our sources are secular–but it’s worth describing the qualities of a sacred text, which we still look for in the readings we choose. It is any reading that helps us to:

  • connect to something of supreme importance to us
  • feel more connected to other beings or to the universe
  • feel more intensely alive
  • align our lives with our values,
  • perceive or feel more deeply
  • be more fully and authentically ourselves.

Resonant Reading (Saturday)Resonant Reading (Saturday)

08/16/2025, 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm (Add to calendar: Google, iCal, webcal)

Together, we:

  • Explore the spiritual dimensions and meaning of our parenting and
  • Cultivate deep connections with one another.

The group is facilitated by fellow UUCPA parent Matt Rosin.
