Resonant Reading (Wednesday) - Your life matters-GoodallResonant Reading (Wednesday) – Your life matters-Goodall

11/05/2025, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm (Add to calendar: Google, iCal, webcal)

An exploration of ideas, feelings, and our life experiences, using a different short reading as our springboard each time. The sessions are on Saturdays, 4-5, and on Wednesdays, 12-1. All are wide open and you are welcome to come twice a week or once in a while.
The participants over the years have found that the approach we take, and the respectful, affectionate community of inquirers in which we read and converse, are as important as the reading itself. While many small groups begin with a check-in, with a session only an hour long, Resonant Reading jumps right in to the conversation. Those who are frequently in the group get to know each other very well this way, and those who are new will soon find they are among friends.

Facilitators use a light hand, posting the reading in the chat and calling on whoever’s Zoom hand is up. Suggestions for readings* come from group members, who also take turns facilitating, if they want to try that role.

The reading for this session:

In the place where I am now, I look back over my life. I look back at the world I’ve left behind. What message do I want to leave? I want to make sure that you all understand that each and every one of you has a role to play. You may not know it, you may not find it, but your life matters, and you are here for a reason.

And I just hope that reason will become apparent as you live through your life. I want you to know that, whether or not you find that role that you’re supposed to play, your life does matter, and that every single day you live, you make a difference in the world. And you get to choose the difference that you make.

–First two paragraphs of Jane Goodall’s “last words” (https://janegoodall.ca/our-stories/dr-jane-goodall-leaves-behind-her-last-words/)

*This activity was formerly called “Sacred Text Reading.” That proved misleading–for one thing, more often than not our sources are secular–but it’s worth describing the qualities of a sacred text, which we still look for in the readings we choose. It is any reading that helps us to:

  • connect to something of supreme importance to us
  • feel more connected to other beings or to the universe
  • feel more intensely alive
  • align our lives with our values,
  • perceive or feel more deeply
  • be more fully and authentically ourselves.

Mars Express (2023 animated movie)

11/19/2025, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm (Add to calendar: Google, iCal, webcal)

At the November 19, 2025 meeting, we’ll discuss the 2023 animated movie “Mars Express”.

From Wikipedia:

“… In 2200, Aline Ruby, a private detective, and Carlos Rivera, an android replica of her partner who died five years earlier, are sent to Earth to capture Roberta Williams, a robot-hacking criminal. Aline and Carlos venture to the depths of Noctis, the main terrestrial establishment of Mars created thanks to the progress of robotics, and where humans and various forms of androids seem to coexist in harmony. The city turns out to hide secrets such as trafficking and clandestine computer labs. Meanwhile, activists try to free the robots from the security constraints that bind them to humans.”

The movie is available on DVD at some libraries or for rental on Amazon and other places.

At the end of the meeting, we will choose a movie for our January 21st meeting.

The Sci-Fi and Fantasy Discussion Group was meeting via Zoom before it was cool! Lovers of science fiction and fantasy, at UUCPA and beyond, have been getting together online to talk about books, movies, and television episodes chosen by the group, every other month since early 2019. Past books include The Broken Earth Trilogy (N. K. Jemisin), The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (Robert Heinlein), Parable of the Sower (Octavia Butler), The Left Hand of Darkness (Ursula K. Le Guin), Red Moon (Kim Stanley Robinson); past television and movies include Arrival, Blink (Doctor Who), Serenity and The Train Job (Firefly), and The Day the Earth Stood Still.

The meeting method: via Zoom, 7-8:30 p.m.

Family Service Project: Make & Deliver Sack Lunches: Saturday, November 8, 2025

We are making 64 sack lunches for our unhoused neighbors in East Palo Alto and Redwood City, followed by an optional delivery caravan.

Two Ways to Help:

Morning Prep (9:00 a.m. @ UUCPA):

  • Meet at the church to help assemble the 64 lunches.
  • Who: Kids ages 6 and up who are ready to help.
  • Bonus: We’ll have snacks and playtime afterward!

Afternoon Delivery (11:30 a.m. @ East Palo Alto Senior Center):

  • Caravan with the Onyxx Village Connection team to distribute the lunches through East Palo Alto and Redwood City.
  • Who: All ages are welcome to assist with delivery!

This is a wonderful opportunity for your family to work together to directly support our local community. RSVP here. Questions? Email Rev. Cat at revcat@uucpa.org and/or Grace B. at service.saturdays@outlook.com.
