Beginning in fall 2019, Amy periodically offered a class entitled “White Folks Dismantling White Supremacy”.  In these classes, attendees listened to some of the Scene on Radio podcast series called “Seeing White” and had discussions of racism in our culture and what they, as white people, could do to dismantle it.

In the summer of 2020, the Action Council and the Adult Religious Education Committee began sponsoring an expanded version of Amy’s class. Since then, the new class has met twice a month, on the second and fourth Tuesday evenings of each month from 7:15 to 8:45 via Zoom.

The second Tuesday sessions have focused on podcasts and books illustrating the systemic nature of racism in US society, whereas the fourth Tuesday sessions have focused more on action and reflection. Many people attend both, and opportunities for action are brought to both sessions frequently: for example, we have worked with Reclaim Our Vote to empower underrepresented and suppressed voters, participated in an interfaith prayer vigil after a local race-related hate incident, and written a letter of support to a local restaurant owner who was subjected to a racist rant.

If you would like to participate in the sessions, please sign up to be on the class email list by sending an email to DismantlingWhiteSupremacy+subscribe@uucpa.org.
