Resonant Reading (Wednesday)-ULYSSES from The Human Comedy by William Saroyan
Human Comedy by William Saroyan
07/02/2025, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm (Add to calendar: Google, iCal, webcal)
Facilitators use a light hand, posting the reading in the chat and calling on whoever’s Zoom hand is up. Suggestions for readings* come from group members, who also take turns facilitating, if they want to try that role.
The reading for this session: Wednesday, July 2nd
ULYSSES from The Human Comedy by William Saroyan
The little boy named Ulysses Macauley one day stood over the new gopher hole in the backyard of his house on Santa Clara Avenue in Ithaca, California. The gopher of this hole pushed up fresh moist dirt and peeked out at the boy, who was certainly a stranger but perhaps not an enemy. Before this miracle had been fully enjoyed by the boy, one of the birds of Ithaca flew into the old walnut tree in the backyard and after settling itself on a branch broke into rapture, moving the boy’s fascination from the earth to the tree. Next, best of all, a freight train puffed and roared far away. The boy listened and felt the earth beneath him tremble with the moving of the train. Then he broke into running, moving (it seemed to him) swifter than any life in the world.
When he reached the crossing he was just in time to see the passing of the whole train, from locomotive to caboose. He waved to the engineer, but the engineer did not wave back to him. He waved to five others who were with the train, but not one of them waved back. They might have done so, but they didn’t. At last a Negro appeared leaning over the side of a gondola. Above the clatter of the train, Ulysses heard the man singing:
“Weep no more, my lady, O weep no more today
We will sing one song for the old Kentucky home
For the old Kentucky home far away”
Ulysses waved to the Negro too, and then a wondrous and unexpected thing happened. This man, black and different from all the others, waved back to Ulysses, shouting: “Going home, boy— going back where I belong!”
The small boy and the Negro waved to one another until the train was almost out of sight.
Then Ulysses looked around. There it was, all around him, funny and lonely— the world of his life. The strange, weed-infested, junky, wonderful, senseless yet beautiful world. Walking down the track came an old man with a rolled bundle on his back. Ulysses waved to this man too, but the man was too old and too tired to be pleased with a small boy’s friendliness. The old man glanced at Ulysses as if both he and the boy were already dead.
The little boy turned slowly and started for home. As he moved, he still listened to the passing of the train, the singing of the Negro, and the joyous words: “Going home, boy— going back where I be- long!” He stopped to think of all this, loitering beside a china-ball tree and kicking at the yellow, smelly, fallen fruit of it. After a moment he smiled the smile of the Macauley people— the gentle, wise, secret smile which said Yes to all things.
When he turned the corner and saw the Macauley house, Ulysses began to skip, kicking up a heel. He tripped and fell because of this merriment, but got to his feet and went on.
His mother was in the yard, throwing feed to the chickens. She watched the boy trip and fall and get up and skip again. He came quickly and quietly and stood beside her, then went to the hen nest to look for eggs. He found one. He looked at it a moment, picked it up, brought it to his mother and very carefully handed it to her, by which he meant what no man can guess and no child can remember to tell.

*This activity was formerly called “Sacred Text Reading.” That proved misleading–for one thing, more often than not our sources are secular–but it’s worth describing the qualities of a sacred text, which we still look for in the readings we choose. It is any reading that helps us to:
- connect to something of supreme importance to us
- feel more connected to other beings or to the universe
- feel more intensely alive
- align our lives with our values,
- perceive or feel more deeply
- be more fully and authentically ourselves.

Resonant Reading (Saturday)-Vermeer’s Woman Holding a Balance
Woman holding a balance, Johannes Vermeer
07/05/2025, 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm (Add to calendar: Google, iCal, webcal)
Facilitators use a light hand, posting the reading in the chat and calling on whoever’s Zoom hand is up. Suggestions for readings* come from group members, who also take turns facilitating, if they want to try that role.
The reading for this session:

The text is the painting, but the following quote may be used to catalyze the discussion:
We find, looking back to the conversation-pieces, even to The Procuress, that what is most memorable, most lasting in their drama is the part which has been played in it by the lady. Under the pressure of male attention, neither resisting nor complying, she has remained of her nature intact. There is inherent in her being an inviolable status, a separateness. In Vermeer’s maturity the subject of the conversation-pieces is incorporated in a single body, the standing figure of a woman.
- She is usually alone, waited on only by the light. Daylight, the window itself, is indeed a presence in the room. It is to the light that the musician turns from her lute, as to a beloved visitor. And to the window the girl with her adornment, her necklace, turns no less than to the mirror first to show herself.
- No doubt the picture of the Gold Weigher might have been painted and sold as an allegory of the Last Judgment, in accordance with the subject hanging on the wall. To us, and to the painter, as we imagine, the converse allegory is the more significant, that which gives a quality of the universal, a cosmic balance, to the fact of womanly judiciousness.

First Monday Film Discussion Group
Party Girl
07/07/2025, 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm (Add to calendar: Google, iCal, webcal)
We gather via Zoom on the first Monday of the month for an hourlong discussion of a movie we have chosen and each watched ahead of time. Group members add to the list of movies, the only strictures being that they must be available on Hoopla or Kanopy and be free. (You will want to register for Kanopy for ease of future viewing.) Then, each month, the group votes on the next movie. Menlo Park residency not required. 😉 That’s where the group originated, and the name stuck.
Email Bruce England with any questions and to receive the Zoom link.
Resonant Reading (Wednesday)

Facilitators use a light hand, posting the reading in the chat and calling on whoever’s Zoom hand is up. Suggestions for readings* come from group members, who also take turns facilitating, if they want to try that role.

Campus Vision Groundbreaking Celebration
07/06/2025, 11:30 am - 12:00 pm (Add to calendar: Google, iCal, webcal)
Yes, it’s really happening. After years of planning, meeting, raising money, and permitting, we are finally going to break ground. What started in 2021 as a kitchen remodel project has turned into so much more: New Kitchen + Electrical Upgrade + Electric Heat Pump HVAC + Updated Choir Room + EV Chargers + Bathroom and Shower for our unhoused guests. When we are done, our carbon footprint will be reduced by more than half. Construction will likely begin at the end of June or the beginning of July. The Campus Vision Task Force requests the pleasure of your company at a formal Groundbreaking Celebration on Sunday, July 6, immediately following the service. Think shovels and hard hats, balloons and music, cheese, crackers, and bubbly. Please join us to celebrate this milestone.
