Resonant Reading (Saturday)-Power of thee State-JudtResonant Reading (Saturday)-Power of thee State-Judt

10/11/2025, 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm (Add to calendar: Google, iCal, webcal)

An exploration of ideas, feelings, and our life experiences, using a different short reading as our springboard each time. The sessions are on Saturdays, 4-5, and on Wednesdays, 12-1. All are wide open and you are welcome to come twice a week or once in a while.
The participants over the years have found that the approach we take, and the respectful, affectionate community of inquirers in which we read and converse, are as important as the reading itself. While many small groups begin with a check-in, with a session only an hour long, Resonant Reading jumps right in to the conversation. Those who are frequently in the group get to know each other very well this way, and those who are new will soon find they are among friends.

Facilitators use a light hand, posting the reading in the chat and calling on whoever’s Zoom hand is up. Suggestions for readings* come from group members, who also take turns facilitating, if they want to try that role.

The reading for this session: Saturday, October 11th

“[The Christian Democratic Parties (e.g., in Germany and Italy)]avoided class-based appeals and emphasized instead social and moral reforms. In particular, [Christian] insisted upon the importance of the family, a properly Christian theme with significant policy implications at a time when the needs of single-parent, homeless and destitute families had never been greater. Thus Christian Democratic parties were ideally placed to capitalize on virtually every aspect of the post-war condition: the desire for stability and security, the expectation of renewal, the absence of traditional right-wing alternatives and the expectations vested in the state—for in contrast to conventional Catholic politicians of an earlier generation, the leaders of Christian Democratic parties and their more radical younger followers had no inhibitions about enrolling the power of the state in pursuit of their goals.”
—Tony Judt, Postwar

“No state can be strong unless it is sustained by the conviction of its citizens that the state must be respected and strengthened in the interest of all.”
—Konrad Adenauer, Christmas Day Radio Address, 1962

*This activity was formerly called “Sacred Text Reading.” That proved misleading–for one thing, more often than not our sources are secular–but it’s worth describing the qualities of a sacred text, which we still look for in the readings we choose. It is any reading that helps us to:

  • connect to something of supreme importance to us
  • feel more connected to other beings or to the universe
  • feel more intensely alive
  • align our lives with our values,
  • perceive or feel more deeply
  • be more fully and authentically ourselves.

Sci-Fi / Fantasy Discussion GroupSci-Fi / Fantasy Discussion Group

The Saint of Bright Doors

10/15/2025, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm (Add to calendar: Google, iCal, webcal)

The Sci-Fi and Fantasy Discussion Group was meeting via Zoom before it was cool! Lovers of science fiction and fantasy, at UUCPA and beyond, have been getting together online to talk about books, movies, and television episodes chosen by the group, every other month since early 2019. Past books include The Broken Earth Trilogy (N. K. Jemisin), The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (Robert Heinlein), Parable of the Sower (Octavia Butler), The Left Hand of Darkness (Ursula K. Le Guin), Red Moon (Kim Stanley Robinson); past television and movies include Arrival, Blink (Doctor Who), Serenity and The Train Job (Firefly), and The Day the Earth Stood Still.

We’ll discuss the novel The Saint of Bright Doors, by Vajra Chandrasekera

From Amazon:
“Fetter was raised to kill, honed as a knife to cut down his sainted father. This gave him plenty to talk about in therapy.

He walked among invisible powers: devils and anti-gods that mock the mortal form. He learned a lethal catechism, lost his shadow, and gained a habit for secrecy. After a blood-soaked childhood, Fetter escaped his rural hometown for the big city, and fell into a broader world where divine destinies are a dime a dozen.

Everything in Luriat is more than it seems. Group therapy is recruitment for a revolutionary cadre. Junk email hints at the arrival of a god. Every door is laden with potential, and once closed may never open again. The city is scattered with Bright Doors, looming portals through which a cold wind blows. In this unknowable metropolis, Fetter will discover what kind of man he is, and his discovery will rewrite the world.”

At the end of the meeting, we will choose a book for our January meeting.

The meeting method: via Zoom, 7-8:30 p.m.

  • Dates: Third Wednesdays, except for December and summer

10/19/2025, 11:30 am - 12:30 pm Fireside Room (Add to calendar: Google, iCal, webcal)

If you are a parent to a child between the ages of birth through high school, we invite you to join UUCPA’s monthly parent group, Spiritual Adventures In Parenting!

We meet on the third Sunday of each month, from 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m., following the church service. Childcare is provided, and families can choose to have lunch together afterward if they wish.

Together, we:

  • Explore the spiritual dimensions and meaning of our parenting and
  • Cultivate deep connections with one another.

The group is facilitated by fellow UUCPA parent Matt Rosin.

To find out more, email spiritualparenting@uucpa.org.

Resonant Reading (Wednesday)Resonant Reading (Wednesday)

10/22/2025, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm (Add to calendar: Google, iCal, webcal)
